Located in the heart of Florida (just north or Orlando) the MREC is a center for research, teaching, and extension programs such as Pest Management University.  With over 130,000 square feet of greenhouses, 20,000 square feet of laboratories, classrooms, and over 12 full-time faculty members.

The MREC address is 2725 S Binion Rd, Apopka, FL 32703

Termite Training Facility

The Termite Training Facility is the flagship structure at Pest Management University (PMU).  The Termite Training Facility is a 6,000 square foot covered structure with 52 different elements commonly seen in building construction.  Elements include slab types (monolithic, supported, floating, and crawlspace), wall types (stud, concrete, styrofoam block), sheathing (foam, brick, wood, hardi-plank), pier types, plumbing, electrical, and other commonly encounter building elements.  In real life these elements are often covered and not visible during termite inspections and treatments.  The Termite Training Facility allows students a unique opportunity to see a “partially built” structure that reveals what is normally hidden out of sight.

Learning Laboratory

The Pest Management Learning Laboratory is a 1200 square foot single family house built specifically to teach pest management courses.  The structure has several different sections to demonstrate common slab types, wall types, siding, insulation types, and other construction elements.  In addition, we incorporated about three dozen common Wood Destroying Organisms (WDOs) into the construction so students can actually see damaged wood, evidence, live/dead insects, and learn how to tell the different WDOs apart.  In several sections the walls are made of clear plexiglass so students can see the building elements commonly hidden behind drywall.

The Pest Management Learning Laboratory is also used in our General Household Pest Control (GHP) courses.  Students learn hands-on how to inspect/treat for bed bugs, ants, roaches, rodents and other common household pests.  Students will learn how to use common application equipment to make applications to the inside and outside of the structure.

MREC has two main classrooms we use for Pest Management University.  Most commonly we use the small classroom that can hold 40 students.  This is perfect for our hands-on approach to teaching.  We also have a lecture hall with a capacity of 120 students for large events like Dr. Corrigan’s 1-day “State of Rodent Control” presentation.

Pest Management University had two laboratories each with a capacity of 25 students.  These are used when we break into small group sessions for hands-on time.  Examples of these sessions would be to use microscopes, identify pests, or to see different products and materials (such as rodent equipment) up close and personal.
